A sign-up sheet is available for public comment. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting. Speakers will be asked to limit their comments to 5 minutes each, except in the event there are more than six speakers per session, at which time the chairman may limit the time allotted to 3-5 minutes per speaker. Speakers will be asked to refrain from discussing any individuals by name in accordance with the North Carolina Open Meetings Law. No solicitations will be allowed during public comment.

National Teacher Appreciation Week

The week of May 7-11, 2012 is recognized as “National Teacher Appreciation Week.” School organizations across the country will have activities throughout the week to honor and thank teachers for all that they do. As a part of the celebration, the TCAE “Friends of Education” banquet will be held on May 8, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Rogow Room.

School Bus Driver Appreciation Week

The week of February 13-17, 2012 was School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in North Carolina. To honor our dedicated school bus drivers who safely transport children to and from schools each day, the annual TCS Bus Driver Appreciation Banquet will be held at 6:00 p.m. on May 24, 2012 at Twin Dragons Restaurant in Brevard.

TCAEOP Awards Reception

On May 2, 2012, the Transylvania County Association of Educational Office Professionals (TCAEOP) held its annual Administrators’ and Awards Reception in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. TCAEOP President, Marinda Parris, gave the welcome, and NCAEOP District 1 President, Tonja Hall, shared news from the the district. Tracie Owen presented a $500 scholarship to RHS student, Devon McIntosh. Leigh Anne McJunkin was named EOP of the Year, and Dr. Scott Elliott was named Administrator of the Year. Dr. McDaris gave closing remarks.

Regional Science Olympiad

Last month, members of the Pisgah Forest Elementary School Science Olympiad Team traveled to Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory for the Regional Science Olympiad Competition. The PFES team competed against 17 other schools in eighteen different events ranging from creating a pasta tower to launching a water rocket. Students trained and practiced for months after school to prepare for the competition, learning about the laws of physics, dinosaurs, botany, landforms, outer space, and other areas of science. The team finished with medals in Circuits, Forces and Motion, and Biomes. Medalists were Jeremiah Shook, Chase Bishop, and Bain Brown. Money for materials was provided by the Transylvania County Schools Educational Foundation. The PFES Science Olympiad is open to fourth and fifth graders and is coached by teachers Bob Dinsdale and Keisha Dawalt.

Congratulations, Dr. Sutton

On May 3, David Sutton, Director of Human Resources, successfully defended his dissertation at Western Carolina University. Our congratulations go to Dr. Sutton for his outstanding achievement.

Local Spanish Students Score Well

Congratulations to students from Rosman High School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2012 National Spanish Examinations. Five students from RHS earned honorable mentions: Megan Anders, Austin Curto, Logan Hogsed, Samuel Johnson, and Tiesha Pressley. Additionally, freshman Samantha Anders earned a bronze medal, scoring high enough to be eligible for a scholarship to attend Concordia’s Language Village in Minnesota next summer. The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6-12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012. Julie Queen and Linda Carrillo are the RHS Spanish teachers.

The following federal grants have been given public notice and will be submitted within the next 30 days. Cathy Childress will discuss the grants and answer any questions you may have. Dr. Kim Elliott will give a report on new designations for Title I schools for the 2012-2013 year: Reward Schools, Focus Schools, and Priority Schools.

IDEA Part B 611	Special education programs for qualified students ages 5-21

Title I	Supplementary reading and math instruction for elementary students (based on poverty)
Title IIA: Improving Teacher Quality	Funds for local school systems to use for staff development, ensuring all professionals are highly qualified, and for class size reduction

At the last meeting, Norris Barger presented the engineer’s plans and preliminary cost estimates for changes to the bus and parent traffic patterns at Brevard Middle School. He will present updates to the plan and review the changes. A revised schematic is attached.

Local Board Training Credit

N.C.G.S. 115C-50 requires all local board members to receive a minimum of 12 clock hours of training annually. The North Carolina School Boards Association sponsors workshops and training activities throughout the year as an avenue for board members to comply with this requirement. In addition, members may attend local or other non-sponsored training activities to earn CEU hours toward the required total. The applications for local, non-sponsored CEU credit require board approval.

Policy CBBC provides for an annual evaluation of the superintendent by the Board of Education. The following timeline is presented for the 2011-2012 evaluation process:

June 18	Superintendent provides self-evaluation to the Board. Board members receive individual evaluation forms to complete.
Prior to July 16	Board members return evaluation forms to chair or vice chair.
July 16 (closed session)	Board chair and vice chair meet with superintendent to discuss self-evaluation.
July 16 (closed session)	Board members reach consensus on evaluation.
August 20	Board chair and vice chair meet with superintendent to share results of consensus evaluation.
