N.C.G.S. §115C-51 states that local boards shall provide at least one period for public comment per month at a regular meeting of the board.  A sign-up sheet is available for public comment.  A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting.  Speakers will be asked to limit comments to 5 minutes each, unless there are more than six speakers per session, in which case the chairman may limit the time allotted to no more than 3 minutes per speaker.  Speakers will be asked to refrain from discussing specific individuals by name in accordance with the North Carolina Open Meetings Law.  No solicitations will be allowed during public comment.  Sign-up is not required for the second public comment opportunity at the end of the meeting.

Rotary Dictionaries and Reading to K
Each year the members of Brevard Rotary Club provide third graders in Transylvania County Schools with dictionaries.  This year the Rotarians would like deliver the dictionaries in the fall so that students have them to use throughout the year.  They would also to read to kindergarten students as part of their annual service project.  The projected delivery date for the dictionaries is September 22.  Pisgah Forest Elementary School Principal Merriman Nichols is organizing the reading sessions.

Brevard High School teachers Sara Plum, Ashley Dickson, and Laura Patch will present a request for approval of a student exchange trip to Denmark in the spring of 2016.  They will discuss the proposed trip and answer any questions from the Board.  A copy of the tentative itinerary is attached. 
 
Policy IIC, “Field Trip Approval and Cancellation,” states that field trips outside the continental United States shall not be sponsored or approved by individual schools without prior approval of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the superintendent.  A copy of Policy IIC is attached.  Dr. McDaris will make a recommendation to the Board.  Action on the request will be scheduled for the next regular meeting.

N.C.G.S. § 115C-50 requires all local board members to receive a minimum of 12 clock hours of training annually.  The North Carolina School Boards Association sponsors workshops and training activities throughout the year as an avenue for board members to comply with this requirement.  Members may also attend local, non-sponsored training activities to earn hours toward the required total.  Applications for non-sponsored credit require board approval.

Fourteen new policies from the 1000 Series, “Governing Principles,” were presented as first-read information at the meeting on August 17.  One of the policies, 1310/4002 - Parental Involvement, has been revised since that time to reflect TCS current practice regarding “opt out” options for reproductive health curriculum.  The policies are attached.  Jeremy Gibbs will review the changes and answer any questions you may have.
