N.C.G.S. §115C-51 states that local boards shall provide at least one period for public comment per month at a regular meeting of the board. A sign-up sheet is available for public comment. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting. Speakers will be asked to limit comments to 5 minutes each, unless there are more than six speakers per session, in which case the chairman may limit the time allotted to no more than 3 minutes per speaker. Speakers will be asked to refrain from discussing specific individuals by name in accordance with the North Carolina Open Meetings Law. No solicitations will be allowed during public comment. Sign-up is not required for the second public comment opportunity at the end of the meeting.

Frank Patton Celebration

On March 21, Brevard High School threw a surprise celebration for Mr. Frank Patton during the faculty meeting. Band members played “Happy Birthday” and the school presented a beautiful hand-crafted bench that was made by students in Mr. Case’s and Mr. Sanders’ classes. The bench was created with wood from the old BHS bleachers, giving Mr. Patton a literal part of Brevard High School.

The board wishes to thank the former students from Brevard High School, Rosman High School, and Davidson River School who are currently serving or have previously served in the U.S. Military. The attached list of names is recognized at every meeting and read aloud twice a year in recognition of Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Additional names will be included as they are received.

At the March 7 meeting, the board adopted policy 3460, “Graduation Requirements” and struck the language regarding the alternative diploma option in order to consider more specific language to address the alternative or minimum diploma. Brian Weaver will present the revised policy for first-read information and possible approval.

The board may waive a second reading and approve policy 3460, Graduation Requirements, as revised.
