The board of education, as an elected representative body of the school system, wishes to provide a forum for citizens to express interests and concerns related to the school system.  Each month, a part of at least one regularly scheduled board meeting will be set aside for citizens to address the board through public comment.
  • A sign-up sheet will be available for any individual or group to indicate their desire to address the board.  A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting.  Speakers will be asked to limit comments to five (5) minutes each, unless there are more than six speakers per session, in which case the chairman may limit the time allotted to no more than three (3) minutes per speaker.  Sign-up is not required for the second public comment opportunity at the end of the meeting.
  • Board members will not respond to individuals who address the board except to request clarification of points made by the presenter.
  • Except in cases of emergency, information received during presentations will not be acted upon at the time it is received.  It will take unanimous vote of the board members present to take action on a presentation considered to be of an unusual or emergency nature at the time it is presented.
  • Disruptions by any person or persons of a public meeting will be subject to action in accordance with G.S. 143-318.17.
  • Complaints about the performance of school personnel, implementation of board policy, the quality of the educational program, or school facilities should be submitted initially for a response to the school system official responsible for the program or facility or to the superintendent.  The superintendent or designee shall make available policy 2310, Public Participation at Board Meetings, and other relevant grievance procedures to any individual or group submitting a complaint.
  • No solicitations will be allowed during public comment.

Music in Our Schools Month
March is recognized each year as Music in Our Schools Month.  Sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, the event focuses the nation's attention on the need for and benefits of quality music education programs. Schools and community groups celebrate with creative activities and events based on the theme, “Music Inspires.”  We take this opportunity to thank all of our music educators for instilling an appreciation of music and inspiring young musicians and performers to pursue their dreams.

School Social Workers’ Week
The week of March 5-11, 2017 is celebrated as National School Social Workers’ Week across the country.  The School Social Work Association of America website says it best:
For those who do not feel heard – School Social Workers listen.
For those who have unmet needs – School Social Workers advocate.
For those who are marginalized – School Social Workers empower.

“Be the change you want to see in the world” is a quote that has been attributed to Mahatma Gandhi.  We thank our dedicated and caring school social workers and student advocates who go above and beyond seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, to be positive agents of change in the lives of students and families in our community.

National School Breakfast Week
March 6-10, 2017 is National School Breakfast Week.  Launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the school breakfast program to all children, School Breakfast Week is an opportunity to celebrate the millions of breakfasts that are provided to hungry children every single school day.  Our thanks go to the hard working men and women in the Transylvania County School Nutrition department for their work in preparing nutritious, affordable, and tasty meals for students throughout the school year and beyond.

United Way
Transylvania County Schools had another successful donation campaign for the United Way.  For the 2016-2017 campaign, the school system was recognized with the Gold Award, the Highest Number of Donors Award, and the Workplace Heavy Lifters Award.  Thanks to Scott Strickler, TCS United Way campaign chair, and everyone who participated.

RHS Women’s State Wrestling Champs
Rosman High School's Madison Fisher and Shaylan Fisher competed in the first ever North Carolina Wrestling Association’s Women’s State Championship Tournament in February where they took first place in the 125 pound and 135 pound weight classes.  Way to go, Fisher girls!

Men’s State Wrestling Results
Rosman High School wrestlers Tanner Whitman and Cody Swangim each finished 2nd in the state in their respective weight classes at the recent State Wrestling Championship Tournament.  Tanner finished his varsity career with 153 wins (second most in RHS history) and is the first Rosman wrestler to qualify and place at state in all four years.  From Brevard High School, Logan Roth was state runner-up at 160 pounds, Daniel McJunkin finished in 6th place at 152 pounds, and Cole Galloway took 5th place at 126 pounds. Congratulations to all!

TIME Science Students Represent NC at AAAS Conference
Ingrid Findlay, Selina Brown, Chase Bishop and James Thompson, student scientists from Transylvania County's TIME 4 Real Science Program, recently traveled to Boston to present their research at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting.  The AAAS seeks to "advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people."  While in Boston, the students got to tour an x-ray diffraction lab clean room, perform a lab at Novartis Pharmaceuticals, tour Northeastern University and construct a winning earthquake-resistant structure, meet honeybee expert Mae Barenbaum, and be inducted into the American Junior Academy of Science at a dinner held in the historic Boston Library.  Wow!

National Read Across America Day
Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of famed children’s author, Dr. Seuss.  In schools across America, guest readers are invited into elementary classrooms to read to students and help them celebrate the joys of reading.  Speaking of Dr. Seuss, did you know these five fun facts?
  1. Theodor Seuss Geisel adopted the pen name “Dr. Seuss” because he was saving his real name for the Great American Novel he intended to write one day.
  2. Dr. Seuss was not a doctor.  He briefly studied English literature at Oxford after graduating from Dartmouth, but instead became a cartoonist.  In 1955, Dartmouth awarded him an honorary doctorate.
  3. Only four of the 44 books Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated are written in prose.
  4. Dr. Seuss wrote “The Cat in the Hat” because he was concerned about kids learning to read.  A publisher reportedly challenged him to “write me a story that first-graders can’t put down!”
  5. Dr. Seuss has received an Emmy, a Peabody award, and a Pulitzer Prize (special citation).
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Skills USA Competition
Congratulations to automotive students at Blue Ridge Community College, Transylvania County campus.  Four automotive students competed in the “Skills USA” Regional Competition on Friday and were awarded ten thousand dollars in combined scholarships.  Eight different counties and 23 students competed.  William Partin, RHS, took 1st place; Colton Holbrook, RHS, took 2nd place; and Christian Larkin, DRS, took 3rd place.  These three students will represent Blue Ridge Community College at the state competition in April.

Congratulations to the following BHS and BMS students who earned positions in the 2017 North Carolina All-State Band.  Students were judged on scales, a prepared solo, and sight-reading. The All-State Band will perform in concert at UNC-Greensboro on May 7.
