The board of education, as an elected representative body of the school system, wishes to provide a forum for citizens to express interests and concerns related to the school system. Each month, a part of at least one regularly scheduled board meeting will be set aside for citizens to address the board through public comment.

A sign-up sheet will be available for any individual or group to indicate their desire to address the board. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting. Speakers will be asked to limit comments to five (5) minutes each, unless there are more than six speakers per session, in which case the chairman may limit the time allotted to no more than three (3) minutes per speaker. Sign-up is not required for the second public comment opportunity at the end of the meeting.

Board members will not respond to individuals who address the board except to request clarification of points made by the presenter.

Except in cases of emergency, information received during presentations will not be acted upon at the time it is received. It will take unanimous vote of the board members present to take action on a presentation considered to be of an unusual or emergency nature at the time it is presented.

Disruptions by any person or persons of a public meeting will be subject to action in accordance with G.S. 143-318.17.

Complaints about the performance of school personnel, implementation of board policy, the quality of the educational program, or school facilities should be submitted initially for a response to the school system official responsible for the program or facility or to the superintendent. The superintendent or designee shall make available policy 2310, Public Participation at Board Meetings, and other relevant grievance procedures to any individual or group submitting a complaint.

No solicitations will be allowed during public comment.

Summer School 2017

In June, 175 elementary students attended 12 days of Summer Reading Camp that was held at all four elementary schools. With a laser focus on reading and math, the students were able to increase their proficiency levels in grades 4 and 5 on the re-administration of the EOG. Many third graders completed their portfolio. The classes were small with an average of 10 students per teacher. Thanks to students and teachers for their hard work, and a big “thank you” to Ingles of Brevard for donating popsicles to help the students celebrate after testing.

Our First STEM Camp

Transylvania County Schools will hold its first STEM Camp for thirty rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders on the campus of Blue Ridge Community College during the week of July 17-21. The theme will be "Exploring Space." Each day students will engage in a variety of problem solving STEM activities. They will build and launch rockets, land rovers on the moon without crashing, program robots, and participate in many other stellar activities. Campers will also have the opportunity to talk with a person who builds rockets for NASA. The five-day camp will be intensive and engaging. Thank you to Blue Ridge Community College for their partnership and allowing us to use their campus. Two outstanding TCS teachers, Justin Ausburn and Vincent Warren, will be leading the STEM camp.

Summer Enrichment at DRS

The Summer Enrichment Program at Davidson River School is underway. Students participate in academic as well as enrichment activities to meet a myriad of student needs. Several students are earning credit through online recovery programs; others are getting intensive math help or a jump start on a fall credit. Several rising freshman are even beginning their high school careers. In addition, students participate in Career Academy trips in partnership with BRCC Career Coach Kevin Spradlin. This week's trip will be to Sylvan Sport to learn about Adventure Gear.

Taking Shape at PFE
Pisgah Forest Elementary was happy to receive new tables for the Outdoor Classroom, which have been assembled and put in place thanks to Plant Operations. For the School Improvement goal of making the school visually engaging by adding color to the walls, PFE received a generous offer from former student Julia Lusk and two other students, Gelena Cortéz and Josie Seymour, from the Brevard High School Art Guild. Students donated all the design work and hours spent painting. They have made a wonderful contribution to PFE, showing a lot of love for the school that has helped to shape them and members of their family.

BES In Raleigh For A+ Training
Brevard Elementary School instructional staff is spending this week in Raleigh, training together to join the network of A+ Schools in North Carolina. Students learn when they are challenged to use the full range of their talents and intellectual abilities to address authentic and complex academic tasks in professional and real-life events. The A+ Schools Program began in 1995 as a whole-school model that views the arts as fundamental to teaching and learning in all subjects. Implementation is made possible through a grant from the NC Arts Council and NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Chris Whitlock will present the request for a purchase of 780 Chromebooks and 14 charging carts for the 2017-2018 school year. The devices will be used at Brevard Elementary School (380 units and 7 carts) and Pisgah Forest Elementary School (400 units and 7 carts). Board approval is required for purchases over $90,000. This is a budgeted purchase in the recurring capital outlay budget. Two quotes from Trinity 3 LLC are attached for your review. Mr. Whitlock will make a recommendation and answer any questions you may have.
