Algebra I Winners

The BMS Algebra I team of Glenn Palmer, Zachary Cady, Aaron Green, Rachel Lawing, Sarah Rowland, and Savannah Bradley took first place in competition at Western Carolina University on April 6.  BMS was one of nine middle schools in attendance.  From the 107 students in the Algebra I competition, those scoring in the top ten percent advance to regional competition at UNC-Asheville in early May.  Among the 11 students advancing to regional competition, four are from BMS:  Zachary Cady, Glenn Palmer, Aaron Green and Sarah Rowland.  Their scores were 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 8th respectively.  Among the schools sending teams to WCU were last year’s Algebra I winning school North Buncombe Middle School and Carolina Day School.

Building Futures for Youth Program

The Building Futures for Youth funding request for FY06 was recommended for full funding by the Workforce Development Board Youth Council.  The $80,146 budget will pay for the summer work program, an additional month of employment for Stephen Shields, and three NovaNet licenses.  The Board made no cuts to our requests for mileage, workshop expenses, materials, etc.  Transylvania County Schools was the only program in the four-county area that was fully funded.  FY05 funding was about $67,000.  The Board’s director stated that Transylvania’s request was the only one being fully funded because of the "positive results so far and because of the tremendous turnaround of the program after being taken over from the prior contractor."  Mr. Shields is doing a great job with this program.
