Tech Prep Grant

Transylvania County Schools has once again been awarded a Tech Prep grant.  From the western region, only three received the grants.  Our consortium is Transylvania, Henderson, and Blue Ridge Community College.  Dr. McDaris reports that Buncombe-Asheville City-Madison-AB Tech did not get an enhancement grant this year, nor did Haywood or McDowell.

Recycling Use

When Norris Barger applied for recycling grant funds, he anticipated that 28.68 tons of mixed paper would be diverted from the waste stream.  Final calculations from GDS indicate that 55.5 tons were actually diverted, almost double the initial estimate.  Many thanks to the recycling committee for their hard work and dedication in educating staff and monitoring the program, and to TCS staff for their recycling efforts.

RHS Kitchen Equipment

Over $12,000 in kitchen equipment soon will be arriving at RHS for Billie Wilson’s food classes:

2 Each Hobart N50 Mixers, 5 Qt

1 Each Hobart HL120 Mixer, 12 Qt.

2 Each Vollrath 69500 Induction Ranges

2 Each Cadco OV-350 Convection Ovens

1 Each Cold Tech J4SFF-40B-40 Solid Half-Door Freezer (matches the refrigerator purchased with the money made from embroidering last year)

The equipment is new and is being donated by a food service company in Miami that has ties in Lake Toxaway.  When they found out that Mrs. Wilson had a wish list, they offered to price it out and hopefully save TCS some money.  The company then called back and has donated all of the above!  Although more equipment is still needed, Mrs. Wilson is well on the way to having a first class, certified culinary lab.  As reported previously, she is seeking culinary certification through a new program being introduced by Johnson & Wales.

Also, the CEO of Jarden, Inc., the company that manufactures Ball Canning Jars, is donating 26 cases of jelly jars for Rosman’s canning project.  Mrs. Wilson hopes to receive another Bright Ideas Grant again this year—she submitted it for canning equipment.  The canning unit will begin as soon as school starts.

At the June 19 meeting, Mr. Josh Freeman, Brevard City Planner, presented a request for the school system’s partnership in developing a bike path along Gallimore Road as a part of the North Carolina Safe Routes to Schools Program.  The proposed bike path would connect Brevard High School and Brevard Elementary School.  There would be no financial cost to the school system associated with the bike path, only training time for staff members.

At the July 17 meeting, the Board reviewed the attached resolution and further discussed the matter.  The resolution was tabled.

The Board may take action as desired.

A motion would be in order to approve the resolution.

Dian Brewton, Director of School/Community Relations, will report on the issue of unauthorized solicitations from local business/community organizations by individuals who may or may not represent the interests of the school system.  Her newsletter states:

“Transylvania County Schools depend on local business and community organizations and ask for their help in numerous capacities.  Usually the school, its parent-teacher organization, or an extra-curricular group has organized a campaign with a worthy purpose.  However, in a few incidents last year, no one in the school system knew anything about an activity and never received any of the money, goods, or services donated.  We have no idea how many times unauthorized solicitations occurred.

To reduce the likelihood of further unauthorized solicitations, all individuals who call on businesses or civic organizations requesting support need to carry with them a letter from the superintendent on her official stationery explaining what is being requested and how it will be used.  The Chamber of Commerce is helping us get this information to businesses.  We will publicize this practice in the local newspapers as well.

Schools or school groups conducting solicitations should write a description of their campaign including its purpose, who is likely to be making the contact, and how the donations will be used.  Be sure this includes the dates during which the campaign will be conducted.  Send this information in electronic format to the superintendent’s office so it can be incorporated in a letter on letterhead stationery, signed, and returned.  Please be sure to ask for the number of letters the campaign will need.”
