BMS Summer Programs

Dr. Leah Hammond reports that “Get in Shape for Sixth Grade,” a four-day, summer orientation for rising sixth graders at Brevard Middle School, was an outstanding success this year with 91 sixth graders in attendance.  Last year’s program drew in only 12 to 15 attendees.  Each rising sixth grader received a personal printed invitation describing the program and offering them a choice of two camp sessions (morning or afternoon).

Some of the attendees also attended BMS Band Camp, and Band Director Donnie Mulligan said this was the best Band Camp attendance in years.  Both Mulligan and Hammond feel coordinating the two programs was a big plus.

Students at summer camp worked on sports-related activities such as camp pennants, BMS survival skills brochures, locker relay races, and school-wide and library-specific scavenger hunts.  The culminating activity was a "Back to School Picnic," held on August 17.  Students had the chance to meet their sixth grade teachers, new principal, David Williams, and new assistant principal, Tony Meachum.

Mountain State Fair

CTE students from Rosman and Brevard will have exhibits on display at the Mountain State Fair, held at the Western Regional Agricultural Center from September 8-17, 2006.  They are likely to bring home several ribbons.

At the June 19 meeting, Mr. Josh Freeman, Brevard City Planner, presented a request for the school system’s partnership in developing a bike path along Gallimore Road as a part of the North Carolina Safe Routes to Schools Program.  The proposed bike path would connect Brevard High School and Brevard Elementary School.  There would be no financial cost to the school system associated with the bike path, only training time for staff members.

At the July 17 and August 21 meetings, the Board discussed the proposal.  A resolution in support of the bike path has been revised and is presented for action at this time.  The Board may take action as desired.

A motion would be in order to approve the resolution.

The requirements of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association call for local boards to grant permission to employ non-faculty individuals as head coaches of varsity or junior varsity teams.  As a general practice, the Transylvania County Board of Education approves all volunteer and contract coaches for Transylvania County Schools.  John Tinsley will request approval of the following non-faculty coaches for fall sports 2006-2007 (those highlighted):
