Bright Ideas Grants

Billie Wilson, RHS teacher, has received a Bright Ideas grant for $1744 from Haywood Electric Company to use for her sanitation/jam/jelly state fair project.

Mellissa Howell, BMS teacher, also won a grant from Bright Ideas.  Her theme is “measuring steps kids take” using pedometers, stopwatches, measuring distances and having races.

Choruses Perform at NCME Conference

The Brevard High School Chorus and the Brevard Elementary School Chorus will perform together as a featured choir at the North Carolina Music Educators Conference in Winston-Salem on November 13, 2006.  Each year two or three middle schools and two or three high schools are selected to perform for all of the choral directors in the state.  Being invited to sing at NCMEA is a very prestigious honor.  Mary Beth Shumate, BHS Choral Director, has invited the BES chorus to perform two numbers with the high school chorus in order to showcase the fine quality of Transylvania’s music program for other educators in the state.  The other high school chorus (with orchestra) that will perform at the conference is from Wake County.  The Wake County superintendent and the Transylvania County superintendent are planning to attend the performance.

EOP District Winners

Lisa Osteen, the Transylvania County Educational Office Professional of the Year, was named District 1 EOP of the Year at the Fall District meeting on October 13, 2006.  This distinction means that Lisa’s name will be submitted to the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals for consideration with other district winners for the state EOP of the Year award.  The state award is given at the NCAEOP annual conference in March.  Lisa is the secretary/bookkeeper/NC WISE Data Manager at Davidson River School.

Michel Simon, a 2006 graduate of Brevard High School, was awarded the District 1 scholarship at the Fall District meeting of NCAEOP.

Attached for your review is the Davidson River School ABC Incentive Pay Plan for 2006-2007.  Alternative School plans must be approved by their local Board and submitted to DPI by November 1, 2006.  The North Carolina ABC’s Model for Alternative Schools mandates two achievement-based components and three local option components.  At least one of the local components must be an academic measure of student achievement.  Donna Hill, principal, will review the DRS ABC’s Plan and answer any questions you may have.
