NC Middle School Counselor of the Year

Brevard Middle School Counselor, Ginger Long, was named North Carolina Middle School Counselor of the Year by the NC School Counselors Association at their annual conference in Greensboro on November 3.  Those of us who know and have worked with Ginger are not at all surprised that she has been accorded this honor, and we're very pleased that the rest of the state has recognized what a jewel she is!

Efficient and Effective Operation

Transylvania Community Hospital is required by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) to designate an alternate care facility within its emergency management plan.  Alternate care facilities allow hospitals to have plans in place in the event of a surge or influx of patients that exceeds the space capacity of the hospital.  Such an event would be rare and could be an epidemic or terrorist- or weather-related event that would impact not only Transylvania, but other area hospitals as well.  Alternate care facilities ideally are settings with food service equipment, basic utilities, and open spaces.

Transylvania Community Hospital is requesting that Brevard Middle School be designated as an Alternate Care Facility/Surge Hospital in the event of a large-scale disaster.  The assumption is made that school would not be in session in these circumstances.

Management of a large-scale disaster would be coordinated with county and regional EMS to facilitate reimbursement on the state and federal levels.  HEPA filters would be utilized for air quality, and cleaning of the school would be the responsibility of the Transylvania Community Hospital.  The school kitchen may need to be accessed; however, school cafeteria staff would not be required for food preparation.

A proposed Letter of Understanding is attached for your review.  John Tinsley will discuss the proposal and answer any questions you may have.

A motion is in order to approve the Transylvania Community Hospital letter of understanding designating Brevard Middle School as an Alternate Care Facility/

Surge Hospital.
