BMS Receives Haywood Electric Bright Ideas Grant

Haywood Electric Company has awarded a Bright Ideas Grant to Brevard Middle School to implement Noelle Khare’s proposal.  The school will receive nearly $2,000 for science materials to study soil types.  Classes will purchase screen sieves to identify the particle size of soil, and soil test kits to identify the pH, Nitrogen, Phosphates, and Potassium of the soil. The grant will also provide five stereomicroscopes to examine the macro-invertebrates found in the soil.  Each microscope costs approximately $300.  This is what really gets kids involved in science.  They love to see bugs up close and moving around!

Teacher Recognitions and Honors

Transylvania County Teacher of the Year, Mellissa Howell, BMS, is one of two regional finalists in the Teacher of the Year competition.  A group from the West Region will visit BMS and observe her classes.

The following teachers have earned National Board Certification:  1) Kelly Brannock, RES media specialist; 2) Erin Keene, BMS art teacher; and 3) Julie Queen, RHS Spanish teacher.  They will be formally recognized at a future meeting.

BES Students Named to All-State Elementary Chorus

Brent Boehmer, Catherine Lemel, Nicole Miller, Anna Moser, and Samantha Rutledge have been selected to sing in the North Carolina Elementary All-State Honors Chorus.  These fifth graders from Brevard Elementary School were chosen from over 475 recorded auditions by students from across the state.  They will travel to Winston-Salem in November for rehearsals with 150 other singers, under the direction of guest clinician Lynell Joy Jenkins, from the University of Arizona.  A concert will be held for parents, teachers, and the general public on Sunday, November 11, in the Stevens Center, a performance venue of the North Carolina School of the Arts.  These students, all members of the BES Chorus, are sponsored by Brevard Elementary Music Teacher Sarah Moser.

T. C. Henderson

Tony Meachum has instituted “Coffee with the Principal” at TCHES.  The first gathering was on Friday, November 16 at 7:45 a.m.  Parents and community members were invited to an informal gathering to enjoy coffee and share their thoughts about the school.

T. C. Henderson has a new andgorgeous sign.  The pillar is beautiful stonework, and the sign itself is an updated version of the earlier wooden sign.  Parents and the community contributed well over 90% of the cost of the sign.

Veterans’ Day

Rosman Middle School held an open house, supper and program honoring Transylvania County veterans on Thursday, November 8.  Students interviewed approximately 200 veterans and developed presentation displays about them and their roles in the military.  Many of the veterans attended the event.  Over 400 were in attendance at the program.

T. C. Henderson second graders in Lystra Keever’s class developed a PowerPoint production about veterans they knew and their military experiences.  Four of the featured veterans were able to attend the presentation on Friday, November 9.

PFES

Pisgah Forest Elementary School hosted a touring group of educators and administrators from Russia on November 9.  The group visited several classrooms, followed by tea and a Q&A session about the school and school system.  They were a delightful group of folks, and the students and faculty really enjoyed their visit to PFES.  The visitors presented the school with a tablecloth from Russia, and the school presented gifts of PFES coffee mugs and insulated lunch bags. “It was as educational for us as it was for our visitors,” said Mike Bailey.  Judy Wilkes organized the visit.

Thanksgiving Dinner

In celebration of American Education Week, the Board of Education invited all current and retired school system employees to be their guests at Thanksgiving dinner in the school cafeteria of their choice on November 15, 2007.  Approximately 450 current staff and 46 retired staff members enjoyed the holiday meal of turkey with all the trimmings.

Patriot’s Pen Essay Winners

The following students are school-level winners in the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars:

            Adam McCoy, RMS

            Lily Chapman, RMS

            Wesley Benson, BMS

            Wyatt Butler, BMS

Students will receive a savings bond, and their essays will move on to the next level of competition.  They and their parents will be recognized at a dinner at the local VFW on December 10.  This is the third year Adam McCoy has won at the school level and the second year for Lily Chapman.  Adam has also won two years at the county level and gone on to district competition.  Teachers Renee Trufant (BMS) and Debbie Cope (RMS) promote this event at their schools.
