Holocaust Educators Workshop

§      Stacie Dotson and Scott Russell, teachers at Rosman High and Rosman Middle respectively, have been selected by NCCAT to attend the “Becoming Witnesses: Primary Sites of the Holocaust” workshop in Germany and Poland in August 2008.  Specifically designed for alumni of NCCAT and/or Holocaust symposiums at Appalachian State, this experience will deepen Holocaust educators’ knowledge base and allow them to become firsthand witnesses to the physical evidence of death camps, pertinent Nazi sites, and significant Holocaust memorials and museums in Poland and Germany.  Participants will attend a preliminary seminar in March 2008 and a post-trip seminar in March 2009.  This is an all-expense paid trip through NCCAT and its sponsors.

More Holiday Giving

§      During the ten days before Christmas, Davidson River School students held a canned food drive with the proceeds going to the Rosman Methodist Church food pantry.  By the morning of the tenth day, the approximately 100 students in the school had contributed 240 nonperishable food items!  The pastor at Rosman Methodist was thrilled, as this food pantry feeds about 70 people a month and does not receive help from Manna Food Bank or any other organization.  It is supplied purely by donations from church members.

§      Rosman High School students in FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) and Early Childhood I and II classes journeyed to the Hendersonville Toys for Tots regional office on December 11 to fill orders.  In all they filled 348 orders for children in 13 counties.

§      Rosman High students in Julie Queen’s Spanish II class and Billie Wilson’s Foods II advanced class worked together to stage a Christmas Fiesta.  Together, they watched an Internet video to learn how paella, a traditional rice casserole from Spain, is made.  The Foods class then prepared paella and dessert Chimichangas (tortillas filled with banana and chocolate, fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar), while the Spanish class learned two Christmas songs in Spanish and shared a PowerPoint about Christmas customs in Spanish-speaking countries.  The Spanish class also made placemats and Christmas cards for each student in the Foods class.  During the Fiesta, they entertained the Foods group by singing Christmas carols in Spanish.

§      Rosman High’s FCCLA chapter teamed with the RHS Foods II class to prepare and send Christmas boxes to Transylvania County soldiers serving abroad during the holiday season.  The Foods class made pumpkin bread and snicker doodles for each box.  Toiletries, snacks, and individual hand-made Christmas cards were added along with a current newspaper.  The group sent ten boxes to soldiers whose names they collected.  An additional box was filled with school supplies and sent to one of the men who has adopted a school in Iraq.  Packing and mailing of the boxes was carried out by the FCCLA students.  FCCLA students earned money for postage and shipping by manning booths at Halloween Fest and the Christmas Twilight Tour.

BMS 7th Graders Review New Magazine

§      Lisa Smith’s 7th grade class at BMS helped serve as the review board for a new magazine published by the U. S. Forestry Service.  This was a great experience for the students as they got to participate in something bigger than our county.
