BHS Art Students Capture Awards in Pack Place Scholastic Art Competition

Each year the Pack Place Art Gallery sponsors the Scholastic Art Competition.  This is a very competitive national award event for art and writing.  About 500 students from all over western North Carolina entered the event; and 180 entries were chosen to compete for honors in the category of their medium.  The show awards five “American Vision” recognitions, which are equivalent to “Best in Show” in most shows.  Of the five American Vision awards, three went to Brevard High School students.  Other recognitions are Gold Key (equivalent to First Place), Silver Key (equivalent to Second Place), and Honorable Mention.

Logan Treacy, BHS senior, received a Gold Key as well as an American Vision award for his oil pastel portrait.  John Hoyt, BHS junior, was equally recognized for his assemblage sculpture; and Sarah Ausburn, BHS senior, was awarded a Gold Key and an American Vision for her computer graphics entry.  Briana Henderson from Rosman High received a Silver Key for her painting, and Brevard High student Annalise DeJong received a Silver Key for her wood relief sculpture.  Honorable Mentions went to RHS students Brittany Hickman for her mixed media entry and to Tiffany Hooper for her photography.  Brevard High students Mariana Vazquez and Ashley Smathers were each recognized with Honorable Mentions for their computer graphics entries.

Sean Parrish, BHS art teacher, was delighted by these awards.  The school entered eight student works and brought home prizes and recognition for six of them.  This is quite an accomplishment, since some schools in the region entered dozens of pieces.  Rosman High art teacher Amy Schoenacher was also very pleased with her students’ showing.

National CTE Month

February 2008 has been designated as National Career and Technical Education Month.  Schools will have posters and recognitions for various CTE activities.  This year’s theme is “Discovering Skills for a Competitive Workforce.”

TCS Child Nutrition Health & Sanitation Ratings

Davidson River School

99.5

Pisgah Forest Elementary

101.0

Rosman Elementary School

98.5

Rosman High School

100.0

T.C. Henderson Elementary

The ratings for Brevard High School and Pisgah Forest Elementary School are the highest in the county.  Only the hospital and Ingles Deli received scores as high as Davidson River School.  Inspections in October rated Brevard Elementary at 98.5% and Brevard Middle School at 101.5%.  Our nine-year average (1998-1999 through 2006-2007) is 98.68%.

Andy VonCanon

Andy VonCanon, BHS Agriculture teacher, finished as runner-up in the national Discussion Meet contest sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Federation and the Young Farmer and Rancher Program.  Late in 2007, VonCanon won the right to represent North Carolina in national competition in New Orleans in January 2008.  As one of the final four competitors, VonCannon participated in a discussion with representatives from Wisconsin, Indiana, and Georgia.  The topic for that discussion was, “What is the public perception of the family farm, and how does that perception impact future agricultural policy discussion?”  As runner-up in the competition, he received a $6,000 U.S. Savings Bond from Farm Bureau and a Farm Boss chainsaw donated by the Stihl Corporation.

RES Receives Flag Flown in Iraq

Sgt. First Class Donald E. Musser of the 108th Division, U.S. Army, presented Rosman Elementary School with a United States flag that had flown in Iraq.  Sgt. Musser has returned from Iraq and will be training U.S. soldiers in New Jersey and after that Wisconsin.  The school held a special assembly to receive the flag.

BMS Receives Chamber of Commerce Grant

On behalf of Brevard Middle School, Ginger Long, Yvonne Barnwell and Mary Ann Winslow accepted a $350 grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina at the annual Chamber of Commerce Gala.  The award is earmarked for the BMS Exploring Career Pathways programs, specifically to help offset the cost of the sixth grade experience at PARI.  That event is scheduled for early March.  Parents Louise Jones-Herbst and Clara Belle helped with planning the event and writing the grant proposal.
