Endangered Species Poster Division Winner

Brevard Middle School student, Mark Uptegraff, won First Place in Division Three of the   2007 Endangered Species Educational Poster Competition.  The top entries will be combined into the official poster for the North Carolina Zoo Outreach Program.  Division winners will receive their certificates, prize packets and posters during a classroom presentation later this spring.

Rosman Elementary Named Super Safe School

Rosman Elementary School was among 48 North Carolina public schools recently designated as 2007-2008 Super Safe Schools at the Safe Schools and Character Education Conference in Greensboro.  The designation is conferred in recognition of exemplary efforts in providing a safe working and learning environment for educators and students.  The plaque and banner that will be displayed at RES are the results of many hours of work by School Resource Officer Scott Thomas and Principal Caroleen Hodge.  To be recognized as a Super Safe School, schools must submit a 175-page portfolio documenting the safety processes they have in place.  Thank you, Scott and Caroleen, for all your work on this!

Staff Members Honored for Community Service

Four TCS staff members were recognized at the Transylvania County African-American Awareness Celebration held on February 21, 2008, at the Transylvania County Library.    Honored for exemplary community service were James Hackler (Child Nutrition), Linda Locks (PFES), Sheila Mooney (DRS) and Agnes Wilson (MEC).  We congratulate each of these individuals on their most outstanding and well-deserved awards.

“Hop on the BUS” Award

Patrick O'Rourke, BHS junior, was selected as one of the top ten finalists in the statewide "Hop on the BUS" high school business plan contest sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, 4-H, The Rural Center, and North Carolina Real Enterprises.  He received a special award for the best-integrated technology in a business plan, and his overall standing earned him a $500 “seed money” prize.  Patrick’s project involved the development of high-tech ski goggles called “Goggle X.”  Goggle X features a state-of-the-art heads-up display with clock, timer, compass, and temperature display, and well as a RECCO Tracking System for emergency locating.  Dwayne Huffman, BHS Business and IT Department, was Patrick’s sponsor.

BES Donates Pet Food

First grade students at BES work on the concept of “100” in many different ways:  100 pennies in a jar, 100 days of school, and this year, a goal of 100 items of pet food donated to the Humane Society.  The school came very close to reaching their goal by 200%--they donated 198 items!

United Way Gold Award

Transylvania County Schools was recognized by the United Way of Transylvania County with a Gold Award for contributions in the 2008 campaign.

LAMB Donation to Special Education Program

The Knights of Columbus LAMB program gave the Transylvania County Schools Special Education Program a donation of $8,929.60.  LAMB stands for Least Among My Brothers.  The Knights earned that money and a similar amount donated to another local group by selling Tootsie Rolls—one Tootsie Roll at a time!
