National Teacher Appreciation Week

The week of May 4-10, 2008 is recognized as National Teacher Appreciation Week.  School organizations will have activities throughout the week to honor and thank teachers for all that they do.  The TCAE “Friends of Education” banquet will be held on  May 6, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at the Brevard Elks Lodge.

 

School Bus Driver Appreciation Week

The week of May 4-19, 2008 is recognized as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in North Carolina.  We honor and thank our dedicated drivers who safely transport our children to and from their schools and homes each day.  The Transylvania County Schools Bus Driver Appreciation Banquet will be held on June 10, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at Twin Dragons Restaurant.

 

Athletic Passes for TCS Retirees

At the Retired Educators’ meeting later this month, we will provide athletic passes to retired employees.  The passes will have picture IDs, and will not have to be renewed.  Many thanks to Dian Brewton for organizing this project.  Thanks also to the Board for making the suggestion and providing this benefit to our retired personnel.  We will arrange for passes to be made for other retirees at a later date. 

 

BES Participates in Science Olympiad

Fifth grade AIG students from BES participated in the Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament in Catawba County recently.  While the team did not place in the top three overall, they did tie for fifth place in points.  The students have been studying, building and designing for several months, and they spent four hours on a bus on a Saturday!  Medal winners were:

BES Contributes to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Brevard Elementary School staff and students donated $525.26 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  Vickie Denton’s class was the big contributor. 

 

BMS Marathon Fundraiser for St. Jude’s Hospital

Brevard Middle School raised $2,135 for St. Jude’s Hospital.  St. Jude’s provides service free of charge to children suffering from cancer and other serious, life-threatening illnesses.

The following federal grants have been given public notice and will be submitted in the next 30 days.  Dr. Kathy Haehnel will discuss the grants and answer any questions you may have:

 

§      IDEA Part B 611 – Special education programs for qualified students ages 5-21

 

§      IDEA Part B 619 – Special education programs for qualified students ages 3-5

 

§      Title I – Supplementary reading and math instruction for elementary students (based on poverty)

 

§      Title IIA:  Improving Teacher Quality – Funds for local school systems to use for staff development, ensuring all professionals are highly qualified, and for class size reduction

 

§      Title IIB:  Enhancing Education Through Technology – Funds for teacher education in technology, including soft and hardware and assistive technology

 

§      Title V – Additional funding for students who are not native English speakers

 

§      Limited English Proficient Grant – Programs to promote English instruction for non-native English speakers

 

§      Sliver Grant – Designed to increase the capacity of special needs students to access the regular education curriculum

 

§      Safe and Drug-Free Schools – Programs and services to promote safe, drug-free schools

 

§      Carl Perkins Grant – Federal funds for career and technology education for grades 7-12
