BES Raises Money for Ronald McDonald House

BES raised $10,947.60 this year collecting drink tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.  This is $183.60 more than the school raised in 2007-2008.  Don Hogsed coordinates this each year.  The school is very proud of its students for collecting and contributing to this fund.

Relay for Life

Transylvania County raised over $68,200 through Relay for Life this year.  The top team contributor was T. C. Henderson Elementary School with $9,677.85.

Free Books

Before the close of school, library-media specialists in TCS elementary and middle schools received $27,000 worth of new books earmarked for distribution to students.  Titles varied according to the ages of the students for whom they were intended.  Middle school titles included Peter Pan in Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean, Miracle on 49th Street by Mike Lupica, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling, Anacaona by Edwidge Danticat, and Book Without Words by Avi.

First Book, a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring books into the hands of children—especially those from low-income families, and Communities In Schools of North Carolina have a long-standing partnership to provide these books to schools for distribution to students.  Their only rule is that the books must be given to students at no charge.  Transylvania County received enough books to give every elementary and middle grade student one book each.

The program also sponsored Miss North Carolina’s visit to Rosman Middle and Rosman High schools last February.  She talked about the value of reading and presented each of these schools’ libraries with a number of age-appropriate titles.

Brevard Middle School library-media specialist Kristy Bryson staged a party at which the highlight was the book giveaway.  She served snacks and also provided a handout listing safe sites for students who are interested in publishing their creative writing.  Most students who took part in the free book distribution had also participated in the first annual BMS Creative Writing Contest earlier this school year.

BE IT RESOLVED by the Transylvania County Board of Education that recognition, thanks, commendation and congratulations be expressed to the following individual(s):

Specialist Adam Spears, for his service in defense of our country

Adam is a 1999 graduate of Brevard High School.  He attended Brevard Middle School, Brevard High School, and completed grades 10-12 at Davidson River School.  Adam joined the Army during his senior year of high school.  He later completed Basic Law Enforcement Training at AB Tech in 2003, and then joined the Buncombe County Sheriff’s office.  He served one year as the School Resource Officer at PFES before joining the Brevard Police Department where he currently serves as a patrol officer.

Adam is being reassigned from his reserve unit in Lexington to a unit in Morehead City that will be activated to full-time duty in Iraq by the end of the year.  Adam will join Alpha Company, 120th Battalion of the 30th Heavy Combat Brigade, which will be assigned to counter-insurgency infantry duty in Iraq.

Adam will begin preparing for his new assignment in July with infantry training at Fort Pickett, Virginia.  From there, he will receive regular training until his full-time active duty starting in November.  His unit is scheduled to leave for Iraq in January.

As with all of our former students now serving in the military, we are very proud of Specialist Spears for his sacrifice and service to his country.  We wish him a safe tour of duty and a quick return, and send our thoughts and prayers to him and his family during his time away from home.

A motion is in order to approve the resolution.

Carolyn Gordon will present a request to increase adult lunch prices for the 2008-2009 school year.  The Department of Public Instruction did an analysis and determined that the Cost Per Meal Equivalent for TCS Child Nutrition is $2.82.  (The state average is $2.84 per meal.)   Federal law requires that adults pay at least the Cost Per Meal Equivalent for their lunch.  We currently charge $2.75 per adult lunch.  Mrs. Gordon will request an increase to $2.85 for next year to meet federal regulations and cover costs.

A motion is in order to raise the price of adult lunches to $2.85 per meal for the 2008-2009 school year.
