Follow The Band To London!
Since December, the Rosman Middle/High School Band has been working diligently to begin fund raising for their trip to London, England in June 2012 to perform at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The goal is to raise just over $100,000 in order to send 30 students on the trip. A Web site www.tigerstolondon.webs.com and Facebook page, “Rosman High Band,” have been set up to provide regular updates on the fundraising efforts and links to donate via a secure PayPal account. Every cent donated goes directly into student accounts to participate in the trip.

BMS Artwork at Gorges State Park
Brevard Middle School students contributed their artistic talents to the educational exhibits that will be on display in the new Gorges State Park Visitor Center. Construction on the visitor center will begin this spring.

NC Teaching Fellows Regional Finalist
Kandyce Norton at RHS has been selected as a regional finalist for the 2011 North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship. Regional interviews will be held on February 19 at Western Carolina University. Scholarship winners will be announced in March.

February is LOVE THE BUS Month
Parents, students and teachers are celebrating the men and women who deliver more than 1400 students safely to and from school in Transylvania County each day as part of the fourth annual national Love the Bus program. Each school will recognize their bus drivers on February 14 and throughout the month of February. The Love the Bus program, founded in 2007 and coordinated by the American School Bus Council (ASBC), is celebrated on Valentine’s Day and throughout February in school districts across the country as a way to raise awareness and appreciation for the hundreds of thousands of school bus drivers who safely transport more than 26 million school children each day. It is also an opportunity for parents and children to learn more about the safety and environmental benefits of school bus transportation. To help celebrate Love the Bus, parents, teachers and children are encouraged to visit the program's Web site, www.LoveTheBus.com, to share stories about their favorite bus drivers, and make interactive valentines to e-mail or print and give to their bus driver on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Bus drivers receive specialized classroom and behind-the-wheel training in driving a school bus, student loading/unloading procedures, student evacuation, student behavior and security management, and emergency medical procedures.  School districts and companies that manage school bus fleets carefully monitor bus drivers, with some drivers disqualified from driving a bus for as few as two traffic violations.  All school bus drivers are also required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing, and frequent driving record checks. In addition to the qualified drivers, school buses are, by far, the safest vehicles on the road, with a safety record confirmed by government authorities to be better than any other form of transportation. School buses are designed and constructed with more safety features than any other vehicle, and the school transportation industry works continually to incorporate the latest technology, training and testing to keep school buses safe.

February is Black History Month
The month of February is designated as “Black History Month” nationwide. Classes will have activities commemorating the important people, places and events of the civil rights movement and the contributions and achievements of celebrated African Americans.

February is CTE Month
February is Career-Technical Education Month. The month-long celebration of CTE kicks off with National Groundhog Job Shadow Day and concludes with National Entrepreneurship Week USA. This year’s theme is “CTE: Learning Today, Earning Tomorrow.”

Good Sportsmanship
A few weeks ago, the principal of Brevard High School received an e-mail from a Tuscola High School alumnus, Mr. Alan Walker, commending a BHS wrestler, his coach and teammates for good sportsmanship. During a match between Brevard and Tuscola on January 25, a wrester from Tuscola was injured. Mr. Walker’s message stated, “The concern the young man from Brevard, as well as the coaches, showed for the injured wrestler was evident on their faces. The wrestler from Brevard stayed at the edge of the mat, exhibiting compassion for the wrestler whom had been his opponent just moments earlier. When the wrestler from Tuscola was taken from the mat, the great act of sportsmanship shown by the young man from Brevard touched me. Please feel free to share this with the young man and the wrestling team and coaches.  Good sportsmanship is noticed and appreciated.”

Sesquicentennial Coloring Books
Recently elementary school students in TCS received Transylvania County Sesquicentennial coloring books produced by the Transylvania County Historical Society. The coloring books came with flyers to help teachers discuss Transylvania County history with their classes. Because the initial printing contained a few minor errors, the printer offered 300 extra books to the school system. TCS employees may purchase additional books for $1 per copy (limit of 5 per person, please). The public will be able to buy the books for a higher price from the Historical Society. All proceeds will go to fund student and teacher Sesquicentennial projects. Mrs. Sue Fox visited schools with the “coloring book caravan” during the week of February 14.

More Sesquicentennial News
Sarah Justice at RHS is collecting student essays to be included in a Sesquicentennial essay contest. Five “Love Letters to Transylvania County” from BMS students were read on-air at WSQL on February 15. To stay up to date with all of the school-based Sesquicentennial activities, visit www.tcsnc.org and click on the celebration activities link.

Smart Start Board
Rosman Elementary School Principal, Donna Raspa, has been invited to join the Transylvania County Smart Start Board of Directors.

RHS Fresh Market
Students from Rosman High School are selling lettuce and fresh cut herbs from the RHS greenhouse. Their customers include Blue Ridge Bakery and Marco’s Trattoria in Brevard.  Anyone interested in purchasing these products may contact Heather McNeely, horticulture teacher at RHS.

All-District Band
Several members of the RHS/RMS band competed recently in the All- District Band Competition.  They are Brook Owen, Kandyce Norton, Rachel Cobb, Annaliese Brown, Chesney Reid, and Jacey Voris. Three students, Norton, Reid and Voris, are eligible to audition for All-State Band in March.

Dr. Kim Elliott is exploring the possibility of a TCS summer day care program for students in grades K-5. The program would operate M-F from 7:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at Pisgah Forest Elementary School. The cost would be $100 per week per student. A minimum commitment of 30 students per week would be needed in order to implement the program. Dr. Elliott would like to administer the attached survey to determine whether enough parents would be interested in having the summer program. She will request approval of the survey and answer any questions you may have.
