Fourteen office support professionals representing the schools and central office traveled to Greensboro on March 6-8, 2013 for the North Carolina Association for Educational Office Professionals (NCAEOP) Annual Conference. Dr. Jeff McDaris, Dr. Scott Elliott, and Mr. Jeremy Gibbs joined the group for portions of the conference. Jenny Hunter (MEC) received her PSP Professional Renewal Certificate and Leigh Anne McJunkin (BHS) represented the Western Region as the District 1 EOP of the Year.  In addition, RHS graduate, Devon McIntosh, was awarded a $1,000 Staples Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement and commitment to furthering her education. Devon is in her first year at UNC-Wilmington.

United Way Awards
At its annual awards dinner last month, the United Way of Transylvania County presented the Gold Award to Transylvania County Schools for outstanding service to the community. In addition, TCS was honored for having the highest dollar increase in payroll deductions for the 2012-2013 United Way campaign.

Healthy Employee Initiatives
Norris Barger recently announced two new corporate partnerships with the Brevard Health and Racquet Club and the Fitness Factory of Brevard. All full-time and part-time permanent employees of Transylvania County Schools who join the TCS corporate plans at either club are eligible for discount membership pricing--with no enrollment fees. In addition, TCS will be working with BHRC to provide various classes at school locations (depending on participation).

FFA Creed Competition
On March 5, Transylvania FFA students, family members, teachers and local Farm Bureau representatives gathered at the Pisgah Forest Fish Camp for the Transylvania County FFA Creed Awards Ceremony. As a part of the National FFA requirements, first-year FFA students must memorize and recite the organization’s five-paragraph creed to earn their Greenhand Degree. This year, the Transylvania Farm Bureau sponsored a local creed competition for students from RHS and BHS and awarded prizes to the top five contestants. The top contestant from each school will advance to the regional competition in April. The five creed winners were Haley Parker, Nathan Pierron, Faith Farmer, Amy Badger and Lexy Meyers (overall winner).

TCH Students Help Animals
Second grade students in Mrs. Humphrey’s class at T. C. Henderson recently hosted a community service project. The students collected supplies to help unfortunate animals in their community.

RHS Students Achieve ServSafe
Billie Wilson recently reported that 100% of her students passed the national ServSafe exam. Mrs. Wilson teaches Family and Consumer Sciences at Rosman High School.

Fractured Fairy Tales at PFES
Earlier this month, third grade teacher Sabrina Rhodes and others transformed the Pisgah Forest Elementary School media center into a Neverland playground with food, decorations and games from famous fairy tales. Students enjoyed Snow White’s apples, three little pig pops and more.  Borrowing from famous storylines and adding their own characters and props, each of Mrs. Rhodes’ students wrote and illustrated an original fairy tale, all of which were then compiled to create the class’ very own book of Fractured Fairy Tales.

Governor’s School
Brevard High School student, Anna L. Fuller, has been selected to attend the 2013 session of the North Carolina Governor’s School. Her area of study is Natural Science.

YMCA Camp Greenville at PFES
Thanks to the Transylvania Youth Association and United Way of Transylvania County for bringing YMCA Camp Greenville to Pisgah Forest Elementary School. Second graders studied historical artifacts to gain insight into how the mountain environment shaped the way our ancestors stayed healthy, played, communicated, and met basic needs.

Danish Exchange Students at BHS
Brevard High School is hosting 27 Danish exchange students and two visiting teachers.  The students have been able to choose the classes they would like to attend. In Denmark, CTE classes are not offered at the high schools. Danish students take only core courses or go to schools that focus entirely on one CTE area, such as culinary arts or carpentry. The exchange students are staying with various families in the community to learn more about American culture, and they have been experiencing bluegrass music, hiking in Pisgah National Forest, watching the BHS baseball team and shopping. The group visited the Biltmore House on March 15, and will visit Brevard College on the 19th. On March 20, a closing ceremony will be held at BHS at 7:00 p.m., and the group will fly home on March 21.
