January is School Board Appreciation Month
January 2023 marks the 28th anniversary of School Board Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the important contributions that school board members make to their communities.  As citizens who serve students and educators, school board members face complex and demanding challenges.  These dedicated individuals have been called upon to make the hard decisions as they strive toward the shared goal of helping students grow, learn, and enjoy their educational experience.  We thank you for your leadership.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the lasting legacy of the famed civil rights leader to our country and its citizens.  Martin Luther King Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer.  Our thanks to the students, staff, and neighbors who worked on Martin Luther King Day to help improve their communities and commemorate Dr. King’s legacy of service.

On the morning of December 15, Central Office staff, School Nutrition staff, and volunteers from the community met at the Morris Education Center to fill 350 bags of nutrient dense foods for students to take home over the Christmas break as part of the Backpack Buddies program.  Special thanks go to STG Solar Southern Tradesmen out of Pisgah Forest for volunteering their team to help pack bags.  Additional special thanks goes to all school staff who helped pack and deliver bags to our students.

NCSBA Academy for School Boardsmanship
Each year, board members are recognized for their training achievements through the North Carolina School Boards Association Academy of School Boardsmanship.  Certificates are given when a board member has earned a minimum of 30 hours of training during the previous academic year.  The level of recognition is based on the total cumulative hours of training earned.  Congratulations to Ron Kiviniemi for earning a Certificate of Advanced Achievement during the 2021-2022 academy year.  This level of recognition  means that Mr. Kiviniemi has achieved between 201-300 total cumulative hours of training.
